Takanini Library Plans Free Diwali Activities for Local Families

The Takaanini Library and Community Hub in South Auckland is preparing to celebrate Diwali with a series of free activities designed to bring Indian traditions, creativity and cultural learning into a welcoming public space.

The celebrations will begin on 22 October 2026 and continue through to 5 November, featuring storytelling, Indian art workshops, Bollywood dance performances, henna painting and children’s craft activities.

According to Auckland Council, the programme will take place at Te Paakata Koorero O Takaanini, located at 6/30 Walters Road, Takanini.

The opening event, scheduled for Thursday 22 October from 10.30am to 11.30am, will introduce children aged two to five to stories set in India. Families are encouraged to dress in their favourite Indian outfits and participate in the storytelling session.

On 27 October, adults will have the opportunity to explore traditional patterns and designs during a Diwali Mandala Art Workshop. A Bollywood school dance performance on 29 October will provide a platform for local children to showcase their dancing skills and celebrate Indian music and culture.

Additional activities include a Lippan art workshop for adults on 3 November, children’s henna painting on 4 November and hanging ornament making on 5 November.

These initiatives demonstrate how public libraries can support cultural participation beyond their traditional educational services. For Indian families living in South Auckland, community programmes offer valuable opportunities to share cultural traditions with children growing up in New Zealand.

Activities such as storytelling and art can help younger participants understand the meaning of Diwali while creating memories with their families. The celebrations also welcome people from other cultural backgrounds who are interested in learning about India’s traditions.

This inclusive approach reflects the multicultural character of South Auckland, where public spaces play an important role in bringing communities together.

The Takaanini programme is particularly accessible because activities are free to attend, although registration is required for the adult Lippan art workshop due to limited places.

By combining education, creativity and cultural exchange, the library’s Diwali programme provides a practical example of how local institutions can support Auckland’s diverse communities. Residents interested in attending can contact the library directly for programme details and workshop registration.
